Hingham Earns Number 3 Seed In Tourney

Lady luck was on Hingham's side this morning when the MIAA broke the 6 way tie for 2nd-7th seed. Hingham was picked to be the number 3 seed which means they will get a first round bye and will await the winner of the OA/Milton game which will be played in Easton on Saturday 6/4 at 3pm. Hingham will host the winner on Monday 6/6 at 4pm at Cronin Field. For a complete rundown of the bracket visit: Click Here

Tournament Update

The seedings for the state tournament will be announced on Tuesday. The seedings are done strictly by winning percentage. In the event of a tie, the teams with the same record are put into a hat and drawn at random.
Plymouth North will be the number 1 seed. Seeds 2-7 (assuming OA beats King Philip today which they should) will all be 15-5 which means they will be drawn at random. Here is what each seed would mean:
Seed 1 (PN) - First Round bye, will play the winner of DY/GNB Voke in the quarterfinals on 6/6 or 6/7
Seed 2 - First Round bye, will play the winner of Hopkinton/7 seed in the quarterfinals on 6/6 or 6/7
Seed 3 - First Round bye, will play the winner of Milton or Falmouth/6 seed in the quarterfinals on 6/6 or 6/7
Seed 4 - First Round bye, will play the winner of Milton or Falmouth/5 seed in the quarterfinals on 6/6 or 6/7
Seed 5 - Hosts Falmouth or Milton in first round on 6/2, 6/3 or 6/4
Seed 6 - Hosts Falmouth or Milton in first round on 6/2, 6/3 or 6/4
Seed 7 - Hosts Hopkinton in first round on 6/2, 6/3 or 6/4

What it all means - If Hingham plays a first round game it will be at Cronin against Milton, Falmouth or Hopkinton. That game will be on Thursday, Friday or Saturday. Thursday Hingham has its senior prom, Friday is tough to play because its the day after the prom and Saturday is tough because its graduation day. If Hingham earns a first round bye, they will not play until the following week. Assuming OA beats KP today, which they should, Hingham has a 50% chance at a first round bye.

Hingham High’s Rob Madden pitches no-hitter - Patriot Ledger

QUINCY — The skies were cloudy, but Rob Madden’s head was clear.

The Hingham High junior lefthander threw his first varsity no-hitter Thursday, feasting on Sandwich, 5-0. He struck out nine and allowed only one walk (on a borderline 3-2 pitch) as the Harbormen improved to 12-3 with the non-league victory.

“To be honest, I wasn’t expecting to have a game today,” said Madden (4-1), who waited out two lightning-related delays. “When I got to the field I was weirdly relaxed.”

That was a nice change of pace.

“Rob’s biggest problem is that sometimes he overthinks,” Hingham coach Bob Rodgers said. “Lately he’s been letting the game come to him.”

That was the case against Sandwich as Madden, with his dad Bob in attendance, said he took a simple approach. “My arm didn’t feel great,” he said, “but I knew I just had to throw strikes and get it over (the plate). We have a great defense.

“The key was getting ahead (in counts) early. My offspeed pitches were working well. I’d get ahead with the fastball and then work in the offspeed stuff.”

Madden, who shares pitching duties with sophomore righthander Evan Flanagan (4-1), credited his outfield defense with preserving his gem. He said center fielder Stephan White made several good plays, and Tim Winter and Thomas Costello, who shared left field, each came up with fine running catches. Costello flagged down what Madden called “easily the hardest-hit ball all game” after Madden hung a curveball.

Madden slipped twice while warming up in the seventh inning but finally “found a dry spot on the mound” and went to work finishing off the no-hitter. He took special satisfaction in the final out – a fly ball to Alex Pompeo in right – because he retired the opposing pitcher who had hit him in the sixth.

“Rob was simply awesome today,” Rodgers said.

Junior Sean Greene was 4 for 4 with an RBI for Hingham. White (3 RBI) and Eddie Bowler (RBI) each had two hits.

Hingham (9-1 in the Patriot League) has five games left in the regular season – at Duxbury on Saturday night; home vs. Whitman-Hanson on May 24; at Hanover on May 26; and a doubleheader against Nauset on May 28.

If the season ended now, Rodgers said the Harbormen would be the No. 2 seed behind Plymouth North in the Division 2 South Sectional tournament. However, he cautioned, “There’s a lot of baseball left. A lot can still happen.”

Madden, though, likes what Hingham has done so far.

“We’re definitely a well-rounded team,” he said. “We don’t necessarily have stars, but we play well together and we have a lot of chemistry.”

Hingham Journal

By William Wassersug
Wicked Local Hingham

Hingham — This has been a very good season for the Hingham baseball team.

With their win over Silver Lake on Friday the Harbormen clinched the competitive Patriot League Keenan Division, improving to 11-3 (9-1 Patriot League), and now look to pick up the best seed they can in the MIAA Tournament, where coach Bob Rodgers will helm his Harbormen for the last time before leaving to concentrate on the athletic director post at Whitman-Hanson.

Rodgers said this has been a great season, especially knowing he would be leaving after the season.

"This team has been such a special group to work with. We have a lot of guys on the team who either were not on varsity last year or didn't play a fulltime role but it didn't take long for guys to find their roles. This is one of the most unselfish groups of kids I have ever worked with and their accomplishments are a direct result of great senior leadership and their belief in each other as a whole,” Rodgers said of his team. “I have found myself reflecting on my three years at Hingham recently and it's starting to hit me that my time is drawing to a close. I always impress upon my seniors the importance of appreciating each moment because it goes by far too fast. I am learning that myself now as a coach and leaving this program is something I don't like to think about. Instead, I prefer to focus on how great every moment is we get to spend together as a team. I am so thankful Ms. (A.D. Margaret) Conaty gave me this opportunity to work with these young men three years ago.”

Rodgers said he felt this team could go a long way.

"The kids have never wavered in their belief that we could be champions again,” he said. “I remember saying it to them very directly at the beginning of the year that I expected us to put another number on that banner. The looks in their eyes that day was one that told me they were prepared to make it happen. When we got the final out to clinch it, they celebrated exactly how a team should....together on the field as a team."

Rodgers felt a big strength of this year’s group was in the way they blended together with a group of young players taking a lot of responsibility.

"If you watched our team play you would never be able to guess the grades of these guys,” Rodgers said. “The younger players carry themselves with such confidence and poise. I would attribute much of their success on the great leadership from our veteran players who have been great leaders and mentors for the younger guys."

The veteran coach is ready for the challenge of the MIAA Tournament.

"We are excited for the state tournament,” Rodgers said. “ If there is one thing I have learned from these kids is that they love a challenge and are ready to do what it takes to get the job done. If we keep playing well, we should earn a home game and perhaps even a first round bye. For now though, we prefer to focus on playing strong fundamental baseball and make sure we peak at the right time. I am glad we clinched so early so that now we can focus on what got us here."

Hingham qualified for the tournament last week, then in two games against North Quincy and Silver Lake clinched a share of the Patriot League title and then the title outright.

In the win over Silver Lake on Friday, Seniors Jake Magner and Alex Pompeo both delivered RBI hits in the bottom of the sixth to highlight a 4-run explosion and help Hingham erase a 4-2 deficit and earn a 6-5 victory over Silver Lake.

With the scored tied at 4 with 2 outs, Pompeo scored the go ahead run on the back end of an

early steal in a first and third situation.

Silver Lake had snapped a 2-2 tie in the top of the inning when Tommy Lennon belted a solo home run. Toby Bouchard homered in the second for the Lakers who fall to 8-7.

Junior lefty Rob Madden earned the win going 6 strong innings giving up just 3 earned runs. Senior David Hogan earned the save with a solid inning of relief in the 7th which included striking out the final batter

of the game with the tying run on third and the go ahead run on second.

Sean Greene and Eddie Bowler both had two hits (single and double) and an RBI for the Harbormen.

Hinghams Rob Madden Throws No-hitter

Hingham – Junior Rob Madden fired his first career no hitter, striking out 9 and walking just one to power Hingham to a 5-0 win over visiting Sandwich in a non-league game.  "Rob was simply awesome today," Hingham coach Bob Rodgers said.  "He commanded all of his pitches and really hit his spots.  He just seemed more relaxed out there today than he has at other times this season.  He was consistently getting ahead of the hitters and that allowed him to make pitcher's pitches."    Junior Sean Greene went 4-for-4 with an RBI for the Harbormen who improve to 12 and 3 on the season.    Sophomores Stephan White (3 RBI) and Eddie Bowler (1 RBI) both had 2 hits apiece for Hingham.

In order to qualify for the post-season, a team must win 50% of their games OR finish first or second in their league. If more than 16 teams qualify, there will be a preliminary round to determine which teams compete in the round of 16. If fewer than 16 teams qualify, the top seeds would earn a first round bye and would advance to the quarterfinal round without having to play a game.
